The Wagner Free Institute of Science began in coperate life in 1855, under the direction and expense of its founder William Wagner (1796-1885). In 1865 the institute opened its new completed edifice which additions and alterantions to is the subject of the first part of this collection. Taken from "Founder’s Week Memorial Volume", Frederick P. Henry, ed., 1909, p. 206-13 Summary Includes design documents for additions, alterations, and interior fixures for the institute, designed by the architectural firms of Collin and Autenrieth, G.W. and W.D. Hewitt (Hewitt and Hewitt), and the Library Bureau, all from Philadelphia. Also includes published (graphic) prints from the Boston periodical The Architectural Sketch Book (published 1873-1876), volumes II-IV, 1874 (with some possibly earlier) to 1876. The series illustrate various building types (schools, hospitals, city halls, residents, etc.) in perspective and in plan, proposed and/or built, primarily in Massachusetts although other New England states are represented. Some of the architects and firms represented in this periodical series are Charles B. Atwood, Theophelus P. Chandler Jr., Cummings and Sears, Ralph Emerson, Gambrill and Richardson, William Longfellow, Peabody and Sterns, Samuel J.F. Thayer, and Ware and Van Brunt.
