Collections

Focus: national. Consists of: approximately 2,000,000 architectural and engineering drawings, plus documents/correspondence, vintage photographs, slides. Strengths: holdings document United States' governmental, civilian and military facilities and constructions from the late 18th century to the 20th century. In addition to site plans and drawings for buildings, there are extensive collections of patent drawings, ship and aircraft plans, landscape architecture, and military ordnance. Accessible through inventories, lists, and electronic finding aids. Drawings can be reproduced. Institution has major conservation and photographic laboratories.

Library Holdings

Maintains a small library devoted to architectural subjects.

Exhibitions

Institution organizes exhibitions. Permanent exhibitions: Architectural records are described in the Guide to the National Archives of the United States. Exhibitions do not travel, but records are loaned for exhibits by other institutions.

Architectural records may be mentioned in catalogues or other publications but the records are not the central themes of the publications.
